Do leaders see themselves as others see them?
Our new global study of more than 40k leaders indicates that it’s remarkably challenging for leaders to see themselves accurately. Even dedicated, effective leaders experience perception gaps: behaviors where the leader’s perception of themselves does not align with how their colleagues perceive them. In fact, the average leader has 8 significant perception gaps – that’s over 35% of the leadership behaviors assessed.
As coaches, we refer to these gaps as behavioral blind spots – and they can create major hurdles to effective development. The more a leader misinterprets how they are being experienced by others, the more likely they are to spin their wheels working on behavioral changes they don’t need to make. Moreover, they may be missing out on developmental opportunities that are more relevant to their work, their colleagues, and the organization. The result? Wasted time and resources invested in development – and ultimately, personal and professional frustration when developmental efforts fail to materialize.
